Episode 91 - How
Andy Started His Career
Andy and Robert
tell the story of where they met and how they started working
together.
Andy
and Robert met 40 years ago when Robert was asked to work as a camp
counselor by a youth director.
- Andy was in the 9th grade.
- They remained friends for the next several years,
fishing, hunting, and having cookouts with Andy’s family.
- Since then, they have worked professionally for 33
years.
After
Robert finished college, he did not want to spend another winter working in
New York.
- Andy wanted to meet Robert in Birmingham, AL,
because he needed a manager to help him begin his career in comedy.
- Both of them had hardly any money, no car for a
period of time, and shared a landline telephone.
- Robert told Andy, “I know nothing about this.” Andy
replied, “Sell me like you would a sell a car.”
Andy
quickly found there was a big difference between being funny for friends
and family and performing in front of people who do not know you.
- After gaining years of experience doing stand-up,
Andy realized that he could deliver important messages through the use
of humor.
