Updating the Map of the 25 Most Expensive Homes for Sale in San Francisco
April's had some big sales and even bigger listings, so this month's map of the 25 most expensive homes for sale in San Francisco has quite a few new members. At $30M, the priciest abode is still former chairman of the Pacific Stock Exchange Doug Engmann's home at 2724 Pacific St. in Pacific Heights. Absent from the list but without a reported sale is YouTube co-founder Steve Chen's penthouse at the Ritz-Carlton, which was asking $8M. Let's get this party started.
2724 Pacific, Pacific Heights
2724 Pacific is a four-level, 7-bedroom home currently owned by Doug Engmann, former chairman of the Pacific Stock Exchange. It can be yours for $30,000,000. The 13,500 square foot abode sits on a lot totaling more than 26,000 square feet, making it one of San Francisco's largest private residential parcels. Property highlights include a gorgeous solarium with koi pond, and a carriage house that doubles as a game room.
3800 Washington, Presidio Heights
Halsey Minor, a technology entrepreneur who you may know as the guy who founded CNET in 1993, bought this "modified copy" of the Petit Trianon in 2007. The 8-bed, 7-bath, 18,000 sq. ft. mansion comes with the adjoining 2,618 sq. ft. guest home at 3810 Washington and a vacant lot (125 Maple) that's currently being used as a backyard. The three must be sold together. The price was recently reduced to $21,000,000. Curbed SF got a tour of the property, and it's in really bad shape. Holes in the ceiling, water damage to the original silk wallcoverings, outdated everything; the whole place will need a complete restoration. If it ever does sell and get the renovation it deserves, we sincerely hope the spectacular ballroom becomes wedding central.
2950 Vallejo, Pacific Heights
This Neo-Tuscan mansion came on the market last year asking $19,500,000. The 8-bed- 5.65-bath abode played host to the 2011 San Francisco Decorator Showcase. The Oakland Tribune published a rumor in 1940 that Princess Stephanie von Hoohenlohe, a "notorious member of Hitler's spy organization," went into hiding here around that time.
164 Sea Cliff, Sea Cliff
This Sea Cliff abode is asking $18.5M. The 7-bed, 6-bath house is perched on the cliffs of Sea Cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The home was built in 1920 and was originally designed by architect Albert Farr.
2898 Vallejo, Pacific Heights
This peachy abode belongs to the estate of the late Frank and Frances Alioto. The 6-bed, 5.75-bath home is asking $13,900,000, down $2,600,000 from last month. The 1920s European-style inspired residence sits on a corner lot and offers up views of everything imaginable.
2666 Broadway, Pacific Heights
This William Wurster-designed home was sold to Internet entrepreneur John McLaughlin in late 2011. He then sunk quite a bit of cash into the place to give it a complete remodel. The 4-bed, 4.5-bath, 4,953 square foot abode is now listed for $11.25M.
2430 Broadway, Pacific Heights
New to this month's list is 2430 Broadway, a 5-bed, 6-bath abode asking $10.95M. Like it? Love it? Sorry, it's already in contract.
34 Presidio Terrace, Presidio Heights
Mayor Joe Alioto's former Beaux Arts home in the prestigious and gated Presidio Terrace hit the market this month asking $8.98M. The 5-bed, 6.5-bath, 8,000+ sq. ft. abode was built in 1911 and was listed for as much as $11M in the mid-2000s. It's already in contract.
2340 Washington, Pacific Heights
This 5-bed, 6.5-bath, turn of the century home was renovated from the ground up. Property highlights include elevator to all four levels; 3 fireplaces; LED televisions; wine room; spa room; terraces, more! It's asking $8,900,000.
Unit 27A at 765 Market, SoMa
At $8.4M, this would be the most expensive condo currently for sale in San Francisco. It's a 3,000 square foot unit at the Four Seasons Residences. The 3-bed, 4.5-bath home was "transformed" under the guidance of Orlando Diaz-Azcuy Design Associates. Monthly HOA dues are $2590 and there's 2-car parking in the garage.
1055 Green, Russian Hill
This Julia Morgan-designed stunner came onto the market in January. The 3-bed, 3.5-bath home is on one of Russian Hill's most coveted blocks and is asking $7,950,000. Most recently, the home went under the knife to be "masterfully restored- from a seismic upgrade to the exquisite finishes that respect the original architecture while adding complete livability for the 21st century lifestyle." The backyard was designed by Suzman Design Associates.
41 South Park, South Beach
This 5-bed, 4.5-bath, 4,800 sq. ft. home came onto the market just this month. It's asking $7.65M. Property highlights include south Park as your front yard and a rooftop terrace with a custom spa. Yes, those are swings hanging from the ceiling that are currently being used as dining chairs.
#8 at 1960 Broadway, Pacific Heights
#8 at 1960 Broadway is a "masterfully renovated" residence that takes up the entire 8th floor of a Pacific Heights cooperative apartment building. The 3-bed, 3-bath apartment is asking $7,500,000. Monthly HOA dues are $1,540.
1110 Green, Russian Hill
This is asleek and contemporary Stanley Saitowitz-designed home asking $6,980,000. The 5-level, 4-bed, 2.5-bath, 3,795 sq. ft. home is basically a museum for stainless steel and glass enthusiasts. Property highlights include floor-to-ceiling windows and an elevator. It's been on the market since April of last year.
3857 Clay, Presidio Heights
This 7-bed, 7-bath, 8,000 square foot home was designed by renowned architect James R. Miller in 1905. It's asking $6,795,000. The 4-story Edwardian hit the market in late 2012, although it made a brief appearance earlier that year and also in 2009. We're seriously swooning over the extensive handcrafted woodwork and original stained glass throughout.
3577 Pacific, Presidio Heights
This 5-bed, 4-bath, 4,264 sq. ft. home is directly across the street from the Julius Kahn Park in the Presidio. If the exterior looks familiar, it's probably because this home was featured on the 20012 AIA Tour. It's asking $6.5M.
1349-1351 Clay, Nob Hill
Originally listed for $6.95M, this property took a break from the market and then came back with a more reasonable price of $5.995M. Though technically two properties, it's being advertised as a single-family home with a separate apartment for extended family. There's a total of 6 bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms.

This is a Grand Residence in the Millennium. It was asking $6,600,000 last month, and is now down to $5,950,000. The 2-bed, 3.5-bath, 2,819 sq. ft. condo is sold furnished. Building amenities include a gym, pool, theater, wine locker, and access to a private dining room in Michael Mina's RN74 restaurant.
2224 Sacramento, Pacific Heights
This 5-bed, 6-bath, 7,983 square foot Victorian landed on the market in late November. It sits on a double lot and has parking for eight cars. The asking price is $5,900,000.

"Just in time for the America's Cup," reads the listing. This 5-bed, 4.5-bath single-family home is new to our map. It's asking $5.75M. The home was extensively remodeled in 2011, and included an addition of a fourth floor. The home's got all sorts of bells and whistles, like a luxurious outdoor spa and a home theater.

New to the market this month is 2714 Steiner. The 6-bed, 4.5-bath, 6,000 square foot home is asking $5.7M.
