I’m not much for the whole New Year resolution thing. I think it stresses people out more than it helps. You put all this pressure on yourself and basically set yourself up for failure and then start beating yourself up about it. I have a different take on this process.
A resolution is really just a Re-Solution. It’s a reformatted, upgraded, improved solution. That’s all. Why put so much weight on it and set yourself up for failure? If you come up with a solution and it doesn’t work, what does that mean (be curious)? What is the opportunity? I think it means you get to come up with a new, improved solution. A Re-Solution!
At the beginning of a new year I look back at the past 365 days and ask myself what worked and what didn’t. What solutions did I come up with that worked? I’ll stick with those. What solutions didn’t work as well as I would have liked? I’ll tweak those. I’ll come up with Re-Solutions for this coming year.
With this in mind, what will your 2013 solutions be? What needs to be changed or updated? What keeps you up at night? What causes you the most anxiety? Choose ONE and only ONE to find a solution for in 2013.
You are committing to finding a solution or even part of a solution for this problem. Finding a solution will likely take several tries. If you need to come up with more than one re-solution for a problem, this does not imply failure. It’s part of the process.
What this means, is when your solution for getting in shape doesn’t pan out quite the way you hoped, instead of giving up and beating yourself up, you re-solution. You find another solution for making it work. What else can you try? Where can you get support? What caused you to stumble? What has worked for you in the past?
It also helps to have a one word mantra for the whole year. This year, my word or mantra is: Clarity. I have had some questions and unclear thoughts swirling around in my head for quite some time now. I definitely need clarity. Keeping this word in the front of my mind will make my decision making process easier for me this year by using it as one of the filters for deciding what I will or will not do.
Remember, slow and steady wins the race. Or, in this case, finds a solution. You might enjoy the high of starting the year out with a resolution but you cannot sustain that high for 365 days in a row. Instead, be thoughtful, find your re-solutions and keep moving forward knowing you may need to make adjustments along the way. Just don’t stop!
Happy 2013!
