How To Prevent Clogged Drains

Clogged drains are a common plumbing problem and can be a major headache for the householder. But a little preventative maintenance may save you a call to the plumber. Following these tips will help to keep your drains clean and clear.
  • Use hair screens. Human hair is a frequent cause of clogged bathroom tub and sink drains. A drain screen is a great way to keep a lot of the hair out. Metal drain screens are usually more effective than plastic, but may have to be changed more often as they can become clogged with soap residue, etc. If you have never used them before, you may be surprised to see how much hair the screens trap.
  • Grease disposal. Don't throw grease down the sink, if possible. If you have leftover grease from cooking, put into an unwanted container like an old yogurt cup and put it into the refrigerator to harden; the grease can then put in the garbage without causing any mess.
  • Hair dyes. Over time, the use of hair coloring products can also clog the drains in your bathtub or sinks. As the sticky residue from hair dyes travels through your drain, it quickly attracts soap residue and hair, causing a sticky mess that can build up. If you think this may be causing a problem for your drains, you should clean your drains on a preventative basis after use (see below). Use the boiling water method only to clear your drains after using hair dye products; there are chemicals from the hair dye residue in the drain and you shouldn't mix them with any other substances.
  • Keep drains open. Every month or so, a kettle of boiling water can be emptied down drains to help keep them clear. Always wear dish-washing gloves when doing this, as boiling water can splash up and cause painful scalding.
  • If drains are running slowly, use a cup of vinegar and a cup of baking soda and pour them down the drain. Leave for thirty minutes and then flush out the drain with two or three kettles of boiling water. Do not use the vinegar and soda mix if chemicals are present in the drain as this might cause a chemical reaction. And don't use a plunger right after using the vinegar and soda mix--make sure you clean out the drain with boiling water first.
