PayPal briefly gives Pennsylvania man $92 quadrillion dollars

eBay-owned PayPal recently sent one man an email balance statement with an eye-popping number attached to it: $92 quadrillion dollars. The company is looking into the error.

A 56-year-old Pennsylvania man was very briefly the wealthiest person in the galaxy this week, at least according to his balance statement from eBay-owned PayPal.
Chris Reynolds told the Philadelphia Daily News that he opened his most recent PayPal email statement to find a balance of $92,233,720,368,547,800.
To put that number in perspective, the U.S. is on track to produce about $15.6 trillion in gross domestic product this year. Reynolds’ massive windfall was roughly equivalent to America’s GDP for the next 5,880 years (if we continue to produce $15.6 trillion in GDP each year).
Alas, even mighty eBay doesn’t have enough cash to cover an errant $92 quadrillion PayPal balance. When Reynolds logged onto his PayPal account, his balance had returned to zero.
An eBay spokeswoman told the Daily News the company was looking into how the error occurred.
Meanwhile, Reynolds has a good sense of humor about the whole thing. He said he’s since received a subsequent email from PayPal.
“The sad part is that I got word that they still need me to renew the credit card that's attached to this account,” Reynolds told the Daily News. “So, even though I have 90 quadrillion dollars, they still don't trust me.”
