In 2007, when Joseph Schumaker started Cosmopolitan Catering Inc. in Sunnyvale, the goal was to be as eclectic as possible to attract the widest range of clients. The company did it all, from backyard parties to weddings and corporate catering. Then, in November 2008, as the economy began its downward spiral, Cosmopolitan Catering fell victim to one cancellation after another.
“It was an adapt or die time frame,” Schumaker said. “By the next June, we had the aha moment that we shouldn’t be spending any time marketing for weddings or social parties when corporate business is more sustainable.”
