As a real estate
agent trainer I get to hear lots of reasons why real estate agents
aren't making any money. And every agent who wonders why they aren't making the
money, has a reason or two as to why they aren't making money.
Are You Really Working?
The number 1 reason a real estate
agent is not making money is because they aren't really working.
Because we don't have anyone telling us what time to go to work, what time to
take lunch, or what time to go home, we get to manage our time all by ourselves.
Sounds good in theory, but in practice it can be difficult. It is also very easy
to lull yourself into thinking that you are really working. For instance, taking
a class on the best real estate apps or doing a webinar on how to use social
media. While these things are helpful and potentially useful, if you don't have
any business, you probably need to be spending your time doing other things.
Open Houses and Floor Duty
Open houses and sitting for floor duty can be two excellent
ways to get new business. Please note I said, "can"...I know there are
exceptions. But I can't count how many times I've heard agents say, "these don't
work for me". Instead of saying, "I really need to work on my open house
skills", they write them off completely. How about partnering with an agent who
is successful at picking up clients during an open house and see if you can
sharpen your skills? While open houses may not be what you do best, it is a
skill set that you can learn.
Managing Your Time
We are all busy. Many of us juggle meeting clients, showing
property along with grocery shopping and picking up the kids. Being busy is no
longer a valid reason. The issue is more likely to be poor time management. Put
yourself on a schedule. The same type of schedule you may have had with your
corporate job...same thing. Schedule time to prospect, to check email, for
marketing, for administrative duties...I think you get the picture.
I Don't Like Excuses
When you work, really work. Approach each day with a
positive spirit and a plan. Sure there will be some days where you won't get
your entire to do list done, but at least you know what you need to carry over
to the following day. Try to make something happen everyday. Be proactive. Make
phone calls, meet people for coffee, attend events where you will be forced to
meet new people. Look at every day as an opportunity to sell a house and before
you know it, you'll be making money.
