LEADERS OF THE SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE LAUNCH QUEST TO REWRITE TAX CODE

Senator Max Baucus, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, along with the committee’s leading Republican, Sen. Orin Hatch, are taking a “blank slate” approach to rewriting the country’s notoriously complex tax code. While it is merely speculation at the moment, the legislators are reportedly expecting their colleagues to come to the table prepared to defend which tax breaks should be retained rather than focusing on which they believe should be cut. The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® is championing real estate tax provisions, such as the mortgage interest deduction, and the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® will follow suit.

HOMES NEAR PUBLIC TRANSIT ARE LESS LIKELY TO GO INTO DEFAULT

According to an analysis of 37,000 mortgages, properties in smart locations are substantially less likely to incur default on payments than those in average locations, with “smart” being defined as having a reduced commute time, use of rail transit, walkability, the presence of retail uses, the integration of affordable housing, and proximity to parks and open space.
