Last week, we brought you a list of Silicon Valley’s 684 political super-donors—defined as those who gave $13,000 or more to political campaigns in the 2012 presidential election. Today, we'll parse that data again, focusing exclusively on local Republican super-donors. Later, we'll study Democrats.
Nationwide, the country's 31,693 super-donors collectively gave nearly $1.7 billion in political donations, according to recently released data from the nonprofit Sunlight Foundation.
Roughly 46 percent of the nation's super-donors are Republican, donating $776.8 million to exclusively Republican causes. By comparison, roughly 33 percent of the nation's super-donors are Democrats, donating $500.9 million to exclusively Democratic causes. The remaining super-donors gave to a mix of candidates and causes.
According to a Silicon Valley Business Journal analysis of the data, the breakdown of the 684 super-donors in our area is essentially flipped—with 55 percent giving money exclusively to Democrats, 31 percent giving money exclusively to Republicans and the remaining 13.7 percent mixed.
Silicon Valley's 213 Republican super-donors collectively gave $14,189,476 in political donations last year.
