Location: Belvedere, Calif.
Price: $35,880,000
The Skinny: This huge mansion on California's exclusive Belvedere peninsula was only built after overcoming significant neighborhood opposition, including a neighbor who called the project a "parachute McMansion" in 2008. Of course, that's when plans were calling for a 10,280-square-foot structure on the 1.14-acre lot. Five years later, the house is complete, despite the opposition, and ballooned to over 15,000 square feet. Built by hedge fund manager John Tozzi, the seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom megamansion includes a three car garage, gated parking for more than 20 cars, 6,000-square-feet of terraces, a swimming pool, a temperature-controlled wine cellar, and a staggering master suite with his and hers dressing rooms and a marble bathtub with bay views. Set on the Bay opposite San Francisco, the property enjoys some of the finest skyline views in the area, plus a full look at the Golden Gate Bridge. A project this luxurious, and this burdened with legal fees, wasn't going to come cheap; It is currently listed for $35.88M.

Incredible views, a true California trophy home!
The land is unmatched. But the overall architecture is bland; the siting missed a huge opportunity by not placing the pool along the water; the kitchen is rather small and pedestrian relative to the house's size and price; and the regular bedrooms are also not scaled appropriately for such a large house. It's a house not worthy of the land it sits on. Too bad.
The outside reminds me of the house Tony Stark had in Iron Man.
