Bay 101 is planning a new casino complex on a 20-acre hotel site at 1740 N. First St., bringing the card-room powerhouse even closer to rival Casino M8trix and further cementing the neighborhood as a regional gaming nexus.
Bay 101 is contemplating a new, 87,000-square-foot card club along with possibly two attached hotels and retail space on what is now the San Jose Airport Garden Hotel, said Brian Bumb, whose family owns Bay 101.
The card room is currently located across Highway 101, in a 75,000-square-foot facility at 1801 Bering Drive. That lease with landlord Peery-Arrillaga is slated to end in 2017. Bay 101 executives, sensing a need for more contemporary facilities and new amenities, have decided to build new.
"It's a combination of things," Bumb told me. "Our building is getting old, and we'd like to do some different things and add some amenities, such as an upscale restaurant."
Bay 101 in recent weeks submitted a planned development application to the city, which seeks development rights for the card room, up to two hotels with 470 rooms and unspecified retail space, as well as permission to allow a card room to relocate to the new site. As previously reported in The Business Journal, Bay 101's owners purchased the 1960s-era hotel from an affiliate of GE Capital in October, paying $24 million, according to public records.
Under plans submitted to the city, the card room would be built on the highly visible corner of Highway 101 and North First. A nine-story, 230-room hotel would be sited along North First, with a second, 10-story, 240-room hotel flanking 101. Kenneth Rodrigues & Partners, the well-known Mountain View-based architectural firm, is doing the design.
