CHECKLIST FOR HIRING PAINTERS

Questions that you should ask during the hiring process include:

1. Should your painting contractor be licensed, and if so how do you check that the license is current and valid? Some states require that a painting contractor should be licensed and you can check this with your state's licensing board.
2. Should the painter carry liability and workmen's compensation insurance? Yes, and you should ask to see the certificates of insurance to make sure they are current. Hopefully your painting project will be trouble-free, but if anyone is injured during the job, you don't want to be held liable.
3. Will the painter carry out a site evaluation, if the job is a major one?
4. Will the painter give me a written estimate for the job? They should. It's a good idea to get at least two and preferably three bids if the job is a major one.
5. Does the painter have references that you can talk to about previous jobs, and can you see those jobs?
6. What kind of warranty, if any, is offered for the job? How long is the warranty for? And what exactly does it cover?
7. If it's a major job, do you need a contract and what should it cover? A contract enables you to know in advance how long the job will take and what you contractor is responsible for during and after the project. The schedule, the date by which the job is to be finished, the clean-up policy that will be in place during the project, are all issues that should be addressed in the contract.
8. If you need advice about color schemes, is a free consultation available? If not, can the painter refer you to an interior designer or a color consultant who can advise you?
9. Will the painter be able to buy paint for you at a discount?
10. Does the painter offer decorative or faux finishes, if that is something you want?

CHECKLIST FOR THE JOB

• If the painting is indoors, decide in advance who is responsible for removing wall items, covering non-painted areas, protecting power outlets, etc. The painting contractors should bring drop cloths and tape to protect non-paint areas.
• If the painting job is outdoors, will the house be power washed first? Find out if you need to make any preparations in the garden or yard for the power washing and painting. If you have any roof accessories, such as a weathervane or gutter guards, do they need to be removed?
• If the painting job is a major, set up security arrangements in advance, deciding how the painters will access the house, disabling alarms, etc.
