A sideways step
Almost daily we read advice in the pages of Linkedin, telling
us how to succeed, how to be more effective in the workplace, how to rise up the
ladder quicker than our fellows.
Recently, a survey was conducted of people approaching the end of their lives, asking them what were their main regrets. A surprisingly high proportion of them replied that they regretted having worked so hard and that they regretted devoting so little of their time to the enjoyment of things in life that really matter.
About ten years ago, my wife and I decided to take a sideways step from our conventional careers, and to buy and run a luxury hotel barge in France. This decision was based on the three P’s – Passion, Practicality and Profit.
Passion because we had set our hearts on developing a really good “product” in a lovely part of the world, where we would enjoy an enviable lifestyle, and where we would enjoy every day of every week whether during the cruising season or not.
Practicality because we felt that we were equipped for this adventure; we felt that although there were certain to be challenges, we between us had a sufficient range of skills and abilities that we could make the project work.
Profit because a flow of cash, and some surplus cash, is essential to achieve high standards, and consequently smiling faces among our guests, and from there the feeling of a job well done shared by the two of us.
Our decision ten years ago may have been fuelled by a desire for a wonderful lifestyle, but we certainly subjected the decision to the three P’s. We have never regretted the decision.
