It’s really pretty simple.Do this:
Be present and pay attention
Focus on the person speaking
Be interested and curious
Ask questions: Clarify meaning even if you think you don’t need to
Think before you speak: Ask yourself why you are speaking and by all means, check your ego
If you do the things above, you will be seen as a great communicator and basically, a nice person.
Do not do this:
Do not interrupt: Nothing you have to say is important enough to make the other person feel that what they are saying doesn’t matter
Do not be thinking of what to say next while the other person is speaking
Do not top whatever the other person just said: No one-upping
Do not make the conversation about you
Do not assume you understand exactly what they are saying or feeling
Do not look at your watch, the door or everywhere except at the person speaking
Do not be on your phone
If you do the things above, you may as well go around wearing a sandwich board announcing your insecurity. We all know it. We do not think you’re cool or smart or clever. We think you are an insecure jerk.
