who blog or tweet?

Happy Tuesday. Some useful links if you're interested in writing and self-publishing an eBook.

Happy Tuesday

My new motto is Short Is the New Long. It's particularly apt if you're in the content business. And most of us are, in one way or another.

Do you blog? Do you tweet? Do you pen witty emails to colleagues or family? You're in the content business.

It's a fact that small bites of content are easier to digest. With that in mind, here is a Happy Tuesday round-up of links about writing and self-publishing and ebooks.

A Kickstarter success story

Last week I interviewed AJ Leon, a nomadic entrepreneur who gave back a large advance to a New York publishing company and then raised over $38,000 with a Kickstarter campaign for his new book: The Life and Times of a Remarkable Misfit.

How to defeat writer's block

This is one of my favorite topics. I can relate to it personally and it's something the writers I work with experience as well. The April 29, 2013 issue of The New Yorker features an article by John McPhee on the topic of writer's block and how hard the first draft always is.

I love his anecdote about the Dear Mother letter describing a bear. You whine and complain to your mother about how hard it is to write. Then you describe the bear you're supposed to be writing about. When you finish, "you go back and delete the ‘Dear Mother’ and all the whimpering and whining, and just keep the bear," writes McPhee.

McPhee, if you're not familiar with him, is one of the masters of narrative nonfiction.

The importance of book design

You may have heard me talk about the importance of a great eBook over. An eye-catching, professional cover - along with a killer title - is what inspires a click to buy your eBook.

An interview with book design expert Joel Friedlander goes into more detail including what you can expect to pay for cover and interior book design. Joel was interviewed by publishing expert Jane Friedman, whose blog I highly recommend.

As always, I'd love to hear from you. Just hit Reply and I will respond.
