Dear ALAN,
It's May,
and the Symphony is gearing up for the final two concerts of our
2012-13 season. But there's still lots to enjoy this spring. This
weekend, we'll celebrate the season with Gershwin's irresistibly feisty
An American
in Paris. The same program features Erich Korngold's lushly
romantic Violin Concerto, which, the composer wrote, needs to be
performed by a Caruso as well as a Paganini - a master of melody as
well as of prodigious technique. World-renowned violinist Andrés
Cárdenes is the perfect choice.
May 12th is Mother's Day! Give Mom a treat - bring her to the Symphony
on Sunday. We'll add another treat from all of us to take away with her
- not to mention a marvelous performance by the orchestra under the
deft baton of Symphony favorite, Maestro Paul Polivnick.
At the same time, subscriptions are pouring in for our exciting new
season, beginning this coming September. Check the information below
and on our website to see what's planned for 2013-14.
I'll see you at the California Theatre.
Andrew Bales,
President

Polivnick, Cárdenes and Gershwin
Our American
sampler program offers us two city portraits: George Gershwin's
high-spirited visit to busy Paris streets and crowded cafes, and
Bernstein's vision of New York's excitement, brutality, and hope.
Erich Korngold was a musical prodigy who mastered the early 20th
century European classical tradition at an early age. In 1938, he
traveled from Vienna to Hollywood to score a film; but the German
occupation of Austria followed shortly thereafter, and his stay in the
US became permanent. Korngold's thrilling epic scores (The Adventures of Robin Hood,
The Sea Hawk) revolutionized film music, and influenced
modern movie music masters such as Ennio Morricone, Bernard Herrmann,
and John Williams. The premiere of the richly romantic Violin Concerto
in 1945 marked his return to concert music.
Award winning master violinist, Andrés Cárdenes, performs Korngold's
concerto with grace and virtuosity.

About Symphony
Silicon Valley
|
Symphony Silicon Valley is the professional symphony
orchestra of San Jose. Founded in 2002, the nonprofit company has
progressed from a daring idea to rapidly become the greater South Bay's
premiere orchestra and a notable community success story. The
Symphony's artists, nationally recruited, locally resident, with an average
performance tenure in San Jose of over 20 years, are recognized as
among the best in the greater Bay Area. Led by an exciting roster
of distinguished guest conductors on the European model, the Symphony
is an anchor tenant of San Jose's magnificently restored downtown
California Theatre, one of Northern California's most outstanding music
halls. Symphony Silicon Valley is setting an example of an
innovative business model in the arts -- market driven and financially
conservative, with low overhead and the flexibility to match its
programming to its support base. Besides its core Classics
programming, the Symphony produces Target Summer Pops, a all-free music
festival held outdoors on the San Jose State University lawn every
summer. The five-concert festival is completely free, and brings
16,000 people out to enjoy the orchestra perform musical favorites in
relaxed, sociable, family-friendly surroundings. The Symphony also
manages ArtSPARK, a Santa Clara County-wide arts education program, and
performs a dozen free, high energy education concerts for 4th graders
each year.
