Giving Value with Advice

Never Eat Alone co-author Tahl Raz interviewed author Michael Ellsberg about his book Education of Millionaires. Ellsberg studied self-educated billionaires, magazine moguls, software jockeys, and more, to create a curriculum for success that you won't find on any college campus. In the interview, Ellsberg spoke about how valuable the currency of advice is.

Advice is a very scalable currency, because in a very short amount of time you can create enormous amount of value for someone. You mention how Keith is a voracious reader. I can’t emphasize how important that is, to read widely in business books, read widely in health and relationship books, read widely in books about leadership, spirituality, kind of finding a purpose and meaning in life. Those are areas that people care about, and if you can be conversant in them, you can deliver a nugget in a minute that could literally change someone’s life. Or even a referral to a book. I have talked about an issue I’ve had, say, I have problems with sleep, for example, and someone says, “Hey, you have to read this book about sleep.” And they give me the book title. Now that takes 30 seconds on their part, and that referral can literally change the course of my entire life. So it's highly scalable because it’s a huge amount of value in a short period of time when you get really good at giving advice.
