Dear Alan,
December 2013
From the Desk of Ted Ray
Over Thanksgiving I had the opportunity to vist my wife's family in Michigan. Conveniently, I lost about 10 lbs on the drive from O'Hare to Berrien Springs because I had to drive through my first snow storm:-) We survived the trip and I have a renewed respect for those who tough it out each winter in colder climes!
Speaking of appreciation, I want to thank all of you for allowing me to support you with your invidual health goals this year and for the opportunity to treat both your friends and family.
While December is a time for relaxing and looking to the New Year, it is also an opportunity to 'clean things up.' So if there's a nagging health issue that's bugging you, let me help you address it right now. Please email me so we can make a plan.
Yours in Health,
Ted
Rate Change Notice: Effective January 1, 2014 my new rates will be as follows: Initial Consult & Treatment: $275; Acupuncture Follow Up: $125.

Hormonal Balancing for Weight Loss
A wise teacher once told me that "hormones are more powerful than diet & exercise- they'll always win."
What this means for you is that if you have a female hormone imbalance (progesterone & estrogen) or blood sugar issues (insulin & cortisol), it'll be tough to change your weight by eating less or exercising more.
One of the ways I help my patients get healthy is by looking at the root causes of difficult weight issues. By addressing the underlying cause, my patients can maximize the benefit of the things they are already doing right. You're welcome to contact me if you've plateued in your program and are looking for some additional guidance.

Hitting a Nerve: Experts Weigh in on Sciatica
Originally printed in the Los Altos Town Crier- Sept. 2013
Sciatica, a condition associated with pain in the hip that may include weakness, numbness or tingling, can start in the lower back and extend down the leg to the calf, foot or even toes. Symptoms usually occur on one side of the body only.
The sciatic nerve – the longest and widest nerve in the body – runs from the low back down the leg to the foot. It’s actually a collection of nerves that begins in the spine of the low back and later branches off to other nerves in the lower leg.
Medical professionals will offer a number of different opinions regarding the true cause of the symptoms. The most common diagnosis, however, is that sciatica results from a problem with the discs or read more...

Thyme for Coughs
With viruses getting worse each year, cold and flus seems to be lingering. The most common symptoms of an unresolved infection is a dry or wet cough that becomes chronic over time.
Fortunately, there are a number of herbs that effectively treat coughs. The essential oil of thymus vulgaris is renowned for its ability to quiet a cough.
It's three chief benefits are as follows:
  • Expectorant- loosens and mobilizes phlegm
  • Spasmolytic- relieves bronchospasm
  • Antifungal/antibacterial- reduces pathogenic fungi/bacteria
In my clinic I offer thyme extract in several products from MediHerb and KW Botanicals. Please come see me so I can choose the right formula for you!

Dec Special: 20% off Gan Mao
Gan Mao Ling is my 'go-to' cold formula during the fall & winter. Perfect for runny noses, mild fever, and head congestion.
Use at the first sign of a cold for best results.

RSV ON THE MOVE!
Respiratory Synctial Virus, a virus typical of mid-late fall accounts for 19-98% of all ER visits. (Infuenza types A & B usually dont show up til Jan-Feb). RSV is characterized by a scratchy, sore throat that goes right to the lungs, and has minimal nasal symptoms. RSV also includes malaise/exhaustion. I have a special RSV Formula that is different from the Cold/Flu formulas for this condition. Please contact me right away if you think you have RSV.
