parent or peerent? Read more from QBQ

Parenting the QBQ Way

Ch. 18 "Do the Hard Stuff"

“Why is my daughter so disobedient?”
“When will my son stop driving me crazy?”
“Who will save me from these children?!”

When parents ask Incorrect Questions (IQs) like these—essentially “Why is my child so out of control?”—it could be because the parent is not in control. The evidence that your son or daughter has become your boss is clear to everyone if:

  • Your child constantly interrupts you when you’re chatting with other people.

  • Your kid whines enough knowing that your “No” will eventually turn into a “Yes.”

  • You make excuses for bad behavior, everything from “She’s tired!” to “He’s strong-willed!”

  • When you tell your children not to do something, they do it anyway because your follow-through stinks.

  • Your son or daughter is allowed to speak to you disrespectfully.

  • Any penalties that you impose for misbehaving are lifted early or never enforced.

It’s a given that we love our kids, worry for them, and want them to succeed in life. We show our love by striving to keep them safe from fast cars, hot stoves, and creepy strangers. But QBQ parents also demonstrate love for their child by not engaging in the weak parenting scenarios described above. It takes both diligence and vigilance to be a strong, accountable mom or dad, but that’s okay because no parent had children to avoid work and inconvenience!

Be a strong parent. Do the hard stuff now.
