Sardinas Marinadas
In true basque style, this dish is a celebration of the most beautiful sardines we've seen or eaten in several seasons. From Half Moon Bay, these sardines are sautéed in olive oil then marinated in garlic, onion, smokey and hot pimentons, vinegar and olive oil. This type of dish is typical in fishing towns when sardines are running, creating an over-abundance of more than can be used fresh, requiring them to be semi-preserved. The result is delectable and made even better by the freshness of our local sardines. This tapa pairs wonderfully with several of our sherries and wines.

Elida Green-Tip Gesha
The Lamastus family has long been known for producing excellent Catuais at their Elida Estate in the highlands of Panama. The Gesha seeds they planted at 1,800 meters above sea level make them among the highest grown Gesha on the market. After four-and-a-half years of growth, the first Geshas began to produce. As they matured, Thatcher Lamastus saw that his Gesha plants developed a distinguishing trait: the youngest leaves on the end of each branch featured either a bronze tip, or a green tip. Verve's green buyer determined that the coffee from the green-tipped plants produced a far superior cup compared to those of the bronze-tipped plants. Subsequently Thatcher Lamastus separated these premium beans, and by doing so, the advent of an entirely new cultivar.
We are proud to be one of the few carriers of this unique bean.
Available only by the cup.

New gear for our Batalla del Vino!
Every week we try to have something new for the Batalla del Vino (our happy hour, from 4 to 5pm, where you can open any bottle in our list at half the restaurant price!). This time it is the 2008 "Ad Libitum", a Rioja wine made using a rare grape: Maturana Tinta. This variety was almost extinct, and has been recovered by the winemaker, Juan Carlos Sancha. Sancha is also professor of Oenology at the Rioja University, and his Ad Libitum wines are always made with indigenous varieties that are on the verge of disappearing. This Maturana Tinta is peppery and very aromatic offering, aged for one year in French oak, with expressive notes of spicy plum and black cherry. Full-flavored and delicate at the same time, it is a toast to genetic diversity and a celebration of uniqueness.

Trio
Saturday, December 21
9:30pm |  $10
Brooklyn-based pianist Erik Deutsch and drummer Scott Amendola met while double-billing on a concert in Boulder, CO in 2001... the rest is history.  Since then, Deutsch has made an annual pilgrimage to the bay area for the winter holidays + a special concert with Amendola.  No doubt there've been some memorable nights:  downstairs (and upstairs) at Bacar with Ben Goldberg + Will Blades, the Red Poppy with John Shifflet, Yoshi's with Charlie Hunter (+ Steven Bernstein and Curtis Fowlkes), Kuumbwa in Santa Cruz, the Make Out Room with Rob Suddoth, the Starry Plough, Coda with Todd Sickafoose, and last year's NYE gig at Duende to name a few...
As usual, they'll be messing with original music by both gentlemen, as well as some jazz + pop standards and a healthy dose of good ol' fashioned improv.  Seats are limited so please get your tickets in advance...

From the Bar
Patxaran Fizz
Known to have existed in Navarre as early as the Middle Ages, Patxaran was initially a home-made liqueur of rural Navarre and became popular during the late 19th century. It was commercialised in the 1950s and then became very popular outside Navarre. One theory for this rise holds that young Navarrese took bottles with them while on National Service, thereby popularising Patxaran throughout Spain.
Our Patxaran Fizz is made with patxaran, genever, lemon, egg whites, and lavender bitters and topped with cava (the fizz).
