The San Mateo startup led by former
Microsoft strategy and development director Hardeep Walla said that the
financing was led by Goldman Sachs Group and included money from existing
investors Foundation Capital, Ignition Partners and Norwest Venture Partners.
Motif was founded in 2010, offering investors a way to invest in themed funds
of up to 30 stocks for about $10 and individual stock transactions cost about
$5.In addition to these custom "motifs," the company this year added a new feature allowing individuals, brands and registered investment advisers to build their own motifs.
It plans later this year to let customers buy into these user-generated motifs on its site, enabling the motifs' creators to market their own investment ideas and receive compensation through a royalty program.
