Debra Chrapaty, the CIO who weaned Zynga from Amazon's cloud, has taken a job as CEO of Intel Capital and Khosla Ventures-backed cloud storage startup Nirvanix.
"I have built and run some of the industry’s largest cloud environments and I believe this company is well-positioned with great growth prospects," Chrapaty told me on Monday. Her departure was announced at Zynga Monday afternoon.
The San Diego company is getting a seasoned technical expert and executive who before joining Zynga in 2011 oversaw Cisco Systems' collaboration services, was a VP at Microsoft and was president and chief operating officer of E-Trade Technologies.
Chrapaty said that despite her long career in big tech businesses, she is ready to tackle running a startup.
"I can get quite scrappy if I need to be," she said. "It excites me. I am looking to build a great company."
Chrapaty joined the Nirvanix board as executive chairwoman last year after it was recapitalized after a $25 million funding round led by Khosla Ventures and Intel.
The current CEO, Dru Borden, is becoming senior vice president of planning & development and will remain as a board member.
Nirvanix focuses on providing hybrid cloud storage for businesses and organizations, meaning its customers can be kept in either a dedicated private storage or in a public site.
"That's a real solution that is perfectly positioned for the direction that storage is moving in," Chrapaty told me.
Regarding her time at Zynga, she called her parting "bittersweet."
"I take great pride in what I was able to build there and have no regrets about the time that I spent there," she said.
