10 Cheapest Cars To Insure
With the cost of motoring having risen through the roof and continued
upwards, we appreciate that it’s becoming more and more difficult for households
to run their cars and juggle everything else they have to pay for. This is why
we’ve compiled a list of the 10 least expensive cars to insure.
Insurance can be one of the biggest expenses for any car-owner, so hopefully this list can assist you in grabbing a great deal and saving some of your hard earned cash for something slightly more thrilling than an insurance certificate.
Of course, prices range based on which insurer you go to so the ‘top 10’ may differ depending on who you get your quotes from, but we’ll focus on some cars in the cheapest insurance brackets: groups one and two. Visit carinsurancegroups.co.uk for an in-depth look at how these groupings are decided upon and www.thatcham.org to find out what insurance grouping your car is in.
Chevrolet Spark 1.0 LSThe Chevrolet is a city car through and through and, though you’re not going to be winning any drag races in it, the 1.0 litre engine ensures that insurance costs are kept very low. The Spark also does an economical 55.4 miles to the gallon according to the Chevrolet website.
Estimate insurance per annum: £600
Citroën C1The C1 also features a modest 1.0 litre which again keeps your insurance premium as low as possible. Citroën have made a real effort with the design of their cars in recent years and this beauty looks and feels great.
Estimate insurance per annum: £800
Fiat Panda 1.1 ActiveThe Fiat Panda is the 500’s sensible big brother and if you can pick up a used version then you’re certainly getting a good car. Again, the engine is no monster but if you drive in the towns and cities that won’t be a problem and buyacar.co.uk informs us that it boasts 49.6 mpg. You might be tempted by the naughtier 500 but remember, this car is in insurance group one.
Estimate insurance per annum: £500
Seat Mii2012 was the year that Seat truly joined in the city car revolution and the Mii is good competition for the rest on this list. One of the biggest selling points of the Mii is how compact it is and therefore how easy it is to park – the Mii is certainly great around the city and is great on paper too, residing happily in insurance group one.
Estimate insurance per annum: £700
Skoda CitigoThe Skoda website boasts that the Citigo offers, ‘a surprisingly generous interior space’, but of course that won’t be as big a draw as the cheap insurance available to you if you pick up this stylish city car from Skoda. The ubiquitous 1.0 litre engine rears its beautiful head again here and, to be honest, if you’re looking for cheap insurance, engine size is one of the first things to consider.
Estimated insurance per annum: £700
Vauxhall Corsa Hatchback 12V ExpressionIf you can pick up a version of this Corsa model made after 2006 then you can get yourself into insurance group one and the realms of good value insurance. With 55.4 mpg fuel consumption you’re going to continue to get good value from the purchase point onwards.
Estimated insurance per annum: £700
Volkswagen FoxPick up a Volkswagen Fox released between 2006 and 2012 and again you’re in insurance group one; a place we’d all love to be in an ideal world. The Fox is a stylish, cheeky version of the Polo and is happy to race the competition off those traffic lights.
Estimated insurance per annum: £650
Volkswagen UpThe Volkswagen Up appears to be the heir apparent to the deceased Fox’s throne, and Volkswagen’s website tells us that the Up provides ‘maximum space with outstanding fuel economy and low emissions’. Again it joins the 1 litre club, but with insurance prices like this, there’s not much to grumble at.
Estimated insurance per annum: £700
Toyota AygoThe Aygo is another fantastic little city number with a 1l engine, and it looks and feels fabulous. This marks the end of insurance group one and the start of group two, but the insurance price is still palatable enough to avoid you spitting coffee all over your insurance certificate.
Estimated insurance per annum: £750
Smart Fortwo CoupeThe original compact car, Smart are still there or thereabouts. Grab yourself one released in 2007 or later and hear your wallet breathe a sigh of relief. We don’t even need to discuss how good this is for city driving and, as it’s parked in insurance group two, it’s not bad for insurance either.
Estimated insurance per annum: £550
All the information regarding insurance groupings can be found at parkers.co.uk and carinsurancegroups.co.uk. The insurance estimates come from confused.com.
