In a ruling today, District Court Judge Lucy Koh stripped $450 million from her landmark $1 billion decision against Samsung in its patent case against Apple. This brings total damages in the case to $599 million.
Judge Koh didn't reverse the jury's decision on any of the six patents that Samsung was found to infringe upon. However, she said the jury failed to follow her instructions on how to calculate damages for utility patents.
The jury's damages still stand for patent infringement for 14 devices, including the Galaxy Ace, the Galaxy SII, and the Galaxy Tab.
The next step is for there to be a new trial to determine the true damages amount for the patents in question, so the final amount owed by Samsung might shift again.
