I might be glued to my iPhone, but rather than sending SMS messages, I have switched over to sending free iMessages and using messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to connect with friends and family. My data plan is a lot happier for it.
While the mobile messaging space has been largely dominated by startups, that hasn't kept bigger players out of the game. On Wednesday, Google united its mail and chat products into a Hangouts cross-platform text and group messaging video app. It just appeared in the Google Play store, but it looks like the company's still rolling it out.
All of these apps are contributing to a decline in texting revenue for wireless carriers - $23 billion to be precise.
Here’s a list of nine (mostly free) mobile messaging apps that you should know about, in order of iPhone downloads.
