A group led by U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo have reintroduced the Paycheck Fairness Act legislation that would close the gap in pay between women and men working the same jobs, Palo Alto Weekly reported.
The current fair-wage law is 50 years old, but Eshoo reported women continue to earn a national average of just 77 cents for every dollar a man earns for doing equal work. She is working with Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., and Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, D-Md. on the bill.
Eshoo represents California's Congressional District 18, which includes Palo Alto, where woman make 83 cents to the dollar, a loss of $6,419 in annual income, according to figures from the National Partnership for Women and Families, an advocacy group.
The 83 cents puts the 18th district below 31 others in California, Palo Alto Weekly reported.
Helping the cause is the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which President Barack Obama signed into law on Jan. 29, 2009. The legislation overturned a 180-day statute of limitations for women to contest pay discrimination.
