Silicon Valley tech companies dominate a new ranking of the highest-paying large companies for software engineers during 2013, though the list does include a few surprises.
In addition to the usual suspects like Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc., IPO-bound Twitter Inc. cracks the top five, followed closely by retail giant Walmart at No. 8. Click the image to the right for a detailed breakdown of the top companies.
Sausalito career site Glassdoor compiled the list from its own employee-reported salary data. Only companies with at least 50 software engineer salary reports on Glassdoor over the past 12 months were included in the report.
Salary and compensation packages are one element of a well-established war for talent among tech companies, though non-monetary perks like nap pods, tons of free food and on-site salons can also now be found in Silicon Valley (read more about that here).
According to the new report, the Bay Area has the nation's highest average base engineering salary at $111,885, followed by Seattle at $103,196. That's compared to the national average of $92,790.
Glassdoor also reports 3,846 Bay Area employers hiring software engineers, based on job postings on the site.
