Breast Cancer Affects All of Us
Breast
cancer is the most common cancer (other than skin cancer) among
American women, and 1 in 8 will be diagnosed with breast cancer
in her lifetime. It's a startling number, but because of your
support we have made significant progress: today, there are more
than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and when it
comes to breast health, don't be fooled by rumors and
misinformation. Get informed and test your breast cancer
knowledge with our Breast Cancer IQ quiz.
Preventing and detecting breast cancer should be a health
priority for all women, and the following steps can help you, or
the women in your life, stay well:
|
|
•
|
The
earlier breast cancer is found, the better. Women 40 or older
should get a mammogram and breast exam every year and report
any breast changes to their doctor right away.
|
•
|
Breast
cancer risk can be reduced by maintaining a healthy weight
throughout life, being physically active on a regular basis (at
least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of
vigorous intensity activity each week) and limiting alcohol
intake to 1 drink each day for women (2 drinks for men).
|
|
|
When you
participate in a Relay For Life event you fight back against
breast cancer and every other type of cancer. Your time and
donations allow us to fund research to find cures for breast
cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer, and all other types of cancer —
because we know that discoveries in one area could help find
answers in another.
We can't thank you enough for helping to finish the fight.
