Pinterest No Nos

Pinterest Monday lesson:  You cannot take an image from Pinterest, download it as your own and use it to direct traffic to your web site.

When you come across pins on Pinterest that you really like and find them useful, you can Pinterest No No'sre pin them to your Boards, which provides credit back to the original Pinner where it shows as a repin. A recent observation has prompted today’s post where I’ve come across some Pinners who have taken my Real Estate pins that I have made myself and used them to direct people to their Real Estate website without even mentioning that the pins are mine. They thought that they could download my pins, then upload the image back as their pin and then when someone clicked on their pin now uploaded, it would falsely lure people to their website where the pin didn’t appear and no mention of pin maker nor it’s content are present.  They knew well enough to upload the image that they had downloaded and then they knew how to edit the pin to change the link having it redirected to their site of choice.  I’m going to give the Pinner the benefit of the doubt and just assume they really don’t understand. However, if it continues, it would be a deceptive practice. This is a no-no.

If you find an image on Pinterest and think it might help your business, just ask it’s maker. Had I been asked I would probably have had no problem with the use of my images, as long as they reference where they came and actually embedded it on the landing web site, yet using it as a lure to take you somewhere and then they don’t even appear at the landing page, is deceptive.

By the way, I saw that image that you created with great fonts and the perfect message that I could really put to use, I’m going to just download it and use it to lure unsuspecting chumps to my web site page.

Kathy, thank you for your kind words. I can always count on you to make my day! I know, why would someone take such measures.
Myri, it will likely always be an issue that we just have to be on our toes about
Liz and Bill, wow that's awful what you experienced. Such deception.
Kelly, thanks and yes, if you have a moral core this will be the last thing that you'd consider.
Ralph, thank you too. It seems that we will always have to deal with the likes of such things and I"m sure that there will be some that slip by. It's just the way that some people are who are always looking for a short cut to succeed. Unfortunately, there are no short cuts and what goes around comes around.
Thanks Matt. Yes, many will gladly allow you to share their work as I would have happy allowed it to having been done the right way.
Carla, I wouldn't let a few bad apples ruin it all as they cannot as I continue to love Pinterest. We just need to be aware. Pinterest is an excellent avenue for Real Estate Agents to market themselves. It's a perfect fit for us.

Evelyn, you're right and I will always wonder why some insist on taking the short cuts.
Laura, yes you get out of life what you put into it
Barry, you should definitely look into Pinterest if you're not there already as it is perfect for us and I would not agree with anyone who says Pinterest is a bad thing. Pinterest and Real Estate goes together like Peanut Butter & Jelly! :)
Christine, it will likely always be an issue. We just have to keep our eyes open but we can't let it spoil the benefits from it.

I love the Pinterest site but haven't used it for real estate yet but I have heard it is good. Need some training.

Lynn, I've got friend/agent who this happens to all the time because his photos are absolutely amazing! His solution is to put a copyright watermark on all of his images. This is actually really easy to do in but with Photoshop. It's a shame he has to go through this extra step, but what you describe seems to be a common practice.

Oh wow! This would never have occurred to me. Thanks for the heads up. But I just hate, hate, hate the idea that I've always got to be watching for stuff like this!

Lynn, downloading a photo and removing the link and uploading to direct traffic to their site is more than someone just not knowing. I would call it stealing and a copyright violation.

That definitely was not the idea of pinterest. Some people just like to do things their way. Downloading and then uploading is deliberate so I don't know how they could not know. If they are smart enough to do that then they are smart enough to know the concept of pinterest. smh

Lynn, I don't know if different rules apply on Pinterest but downloading an image and using it as your own, without giving credit to the maker is a copyright violation. Maybe they thought Pinterest was different but hopefully they get it now. Thanks for sharing your insight!

Thanks for that, just finishing a revised social media policy for our team which was written before Pinterest and you reminded me to add that in!

Definitely something that always is upsetting when you see somebody take your information and effort for their own gain.

This is a good point and I use my own photos as often as possible so that I don't mistakenly take credit for someone elses pictures/work, Thank you, always a good reminder to be cognizant while putting together blog posts, website content, etc.

Norma, you'll love it for Real Estate too. I would think AR University has some good Pinterest training if not, you can go to Google+ and for sure you'll find very informative posts there.
Ann, isn't it a shame what we have to go through. Makes me sick to my stomach
Nina, I know, I hate hate hate it too. Why do we always have to be on the look out for deception?!
Michael, yes you're right. Why can't people find interests with well intentions
Richie, I couldn't have said it better!

Pamela, you're right as that is not what Pinterest is supposed to be about and there's always some that like to take a shortcut to benefit themselves.
Phil, yes, it's pretty simple; taking another's image is a copyright violation.

Graig, I'm glad I got to you just in time!
Morgan, it is upsetting when others simply take and they never think they'll get caught
Gina, we'd all be a lot better off if more were concerned in doing what is right like you.

Lynn ~ how unprofessional and unethical to do this. A lot of people, agents included, that think that if it is online, it is free for the taking. If they google it, they can use it, ... seriously.

I have started going to web sites that give permission with attribution. Its the easiest way to get graphics without the time required to create.

The sad thing is that there is so much more benefit from using Pinterest as it is intended. The more active you are commenting and sharing, the more people take notice of you and start to care about what you're doing. There's also the great option of being able to embed pins, which allows the original pinner to retain all credit and you to share good design ideas.
People need to realize there really is no benefit from stealing a picture and reuploading it with a link to their site, because people click through to see more related to that pin. If they see an off-topic page, they'll leave immediately and that just increases the website's bounce rate, which is bad for SEO.

very good point, its very risky to use other photos that are not for sharing
