Dear Alan,
Due to popular request, I am happy to repeat the Dietary
Supplementation and Diabetes Education classes, taking place
August 10th, and 20th, respectively. Please review the Upcoming Events section
of this newsletter for details.
The Glycemic Index (GI) is a great tool to maintain a balanced
blood sugar. GI is a score indicating how much the blood sugar rises after
eating a specific food. It is measured as a percentage relative to the GI
of glucose at a value of 100. The higher the GI, the more quickly the blood
sugar will rise, and the more insulin is released.
Insulin is a hormone released by your pancreas to control blood sugar
levels. A rapid rise in insulin can cause a sudden drop in blood glucose
levels (known as reactive hypoglycemia), which is why we tend to feel
‘sluggish’ a few hours after eating high sugary foods, and may even feel
more hungry.
In general, I recommend eating low GI foods (score of 55 or
less) about 50-60% of the time, moderate GI foods 30-40% of the time, and
high GI foods only 5-10% of the time.
If you are diabetic, I highly recommend that you limit your
intake of grains, especially rice and wheat, and avoid any added
sugar.
With the exception of ripe bananas and dried foods, most high GI foods are
processed junk food.
You may be surprised that most cereals such as Cheerios, Grape Nuts, Corn
Flakes, Raisin Bran, and Special K, fall in the same "junk food"
category, as a high GI food! No wonder children cannot focus during class
when they eat these high sugary processed cereals!
Most vegetables, and some fruits like berries, apples, and pears, as well
as beans and nuts are low glycemic and make excellent snacks. For more
information and a detailed list of GI of foods, please click here.
In sum, eating low glycemic foods promote healthy blood sugar
levels, and can significantly reduce the risk of chronic conditions,
including diabetes, cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke), and
obesity.
As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
